About This Event
The Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon isn't just a race. It's a 21.1km sightseeing loop through a UNESCO World Heritage site. Every September, 15,000 runners from 100 countries take over the city. You'll spend most of your time on the asphalt hugging the Danube, with a 180-degree sweep of the Buda Castle and Parliament lit up across the water. It's flat, it's fast, and the energy is massive. Expect live bands and drum crews every few kilometers to keep your legs moving. If the full distance feels like too much, grab a friend for the relay or tackle the 10km run. It all starts and ends at the Pázmány Péter Promenade, crossing the Liberty and Petőfi bridges to show you both sides of the river.
History
Budapest started running back in 1984 as a side show to the full marathon. By 1996, the 21.1km distance earned its own day. It spent years as the Nike Budapest Half Marathon, fueling the local fitness boom, before Wizz Air stepped in as the title sponsor in 2014. That move turned a local favorite into a massive international draw. It hit its 30th anniversary in 2015 as Central Europe's biggest half marathon. The 2025 race marked 40 years of runners pounding these streets. Over four decades, the course has been tweaked to keep you right on the water for as long as possible.
The Course & Route

If you want a personal best, this is the place to get it. The Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon is notoriously flat. You'll start at Pázmány Péter sétány in District 11 and point your shoes north. The route stays close to the river, giving you a clear shot of Gellért Hill and the Liberty Statue. Crossing the Liberty Bridge takes you into the heart of Pest. Running past the Hungarian Parliament is a highlight, but watch your footing on the occasional patch of concrete near the bridge ramps. Kilometer markers are everywhere, and the refreshment stations every 3km keep you fueled. If it's hot, look for the misting gates to cool down.
How to Enter

Don't wait until the last minute. Use the 'Run in Budapest' portal and sign up months early. Prices jump from €35 up to €90 as race day gets closer. While you might see Budapest sports arena events sell tickets at the door, this race doesn't. It hits capacity at 15,000 runners and sells out. Pick your distance: the full 21.1km, a two-person relay, or a three-person team. There's also a 10km option starting at noon. Your entry fee gets you the tech shirt, a heavy finisher's medal, and a timing chip. You won't need a doctor's note here, but you'll have to sign a standard liability waiver during checkout.
Spectator Guide

The start and finish area at Pázmány Péter Promenade is a loud, crowded party with food trucks and music. It's fun, but the best views are on the bridges. Camp out on the Liberty Bridge or near Parliament on the Pest side. Because the course loops, you can often see your runner twice without walking more than a few blocks. Use Tram 2 or Tram 19 to move around, but check the BKK app for race-day closures first. If you want to see other top-tier local action, look for the László Papp Budapest sports arena events schedule for indoor matches. For this race, bring a bell and some energy; the runners need it on the quiet embankment stretches.
Getting There
Public Transport
Take Tram 4 or 6 to 'Petőfi híd, budai hídfő' and walk 5-8 minutes south. Alternatively, take Tram 1 to 'Infopark'. The nearest Metro is M4 at 'Móricz Zsigmond körtér', followed by a short tram ride.
By Car
Parking is extremely limited and streets are closed for the race. Do not drive to the venue. Park at a P+R (e.g., Kelenföld or Etele tér) and use public transport.
By Taxi / Rideshare
Set the drop-off point to 'Infopark' or 'A38 Ship' to avoid road closures. Taxis cannot access the immediate start line area on race morning.
Tips
- •Public transport runs frequently, but trams 4/6 will be crowded with runners.
- •Check BKK (Budapest Transport) specifically for race-day detours, as the trams crossing Petőfi Bridge may be affected during the run.

Tips & What to Know
Race Center Location
Head to the northern block of the ELTE Lágymányosi Campus. Look for the white tents on the grass by the river.
Hydration Strategy
September heat hits 25°C easily. Hit every station for water and iso-drinks. Don't skip the bananas at the 12km mark.
Toilet Queues
Use the port-a-potties early. Lines peak 30 minutes before the 08:00 start gun. If you wait, you'll miss your wave.
Medal Engraving
Pay for engraving when you register. It saves time later. You can get your finish time etched onto the metal right at the finish line.
Post-Race Relax
Don't rush back to the hotel. Walk over to Kopaszi Dam park. It's the best spot to sit on the grass and recover with a view.
