The Experience
Don't try to check in just yet. The Danubius Hotel Gellért Budapest is currently a construction zone, stripped back for a massive restoration. Since 1918, this Art Nouveau giant at the foot of Gellért Hill has anchored the Buda skyline with its green domes and turreted silhouette. It isn't just a building. It is the city's spiritual Grand Dame. For a century, travelers came for the Secessionist facade and stayed for the world-famous thermal waters. While it isn't taking reservations today, it remains a landmark you can't miss while crossing the Liberty Bridge. Mandarin Oriental is currently running the show, aiming for a 2027 reopening. They're polishing the Zsolnay tiles and fixing the stained glass to turn this faded beauty into an ultra-luxury retreat. Soon, you'll be able to walk the halls of the Danube Room once again.

The Building's Story
Built between 1912 and 1918, the Hotel Gellért is the peak of Hungarian Secessionist design. Architects Ármin Hegedűs, Artúr Sebestyén, and Izidor Sterk dreamed up a palace for healing. It opened right as WWI ended. Look at the domes and ceramic details. They make it the most photographed spot in the city. It was the first choice for royalty and celebrities for decades. The interiors felt like a time capsule. You had Hungarian myths in stained glass and heavy brass fittings that survived a century of upheaval. Sure, the rooms eventually got a bit tired. But the soul of the place stayed. It captures the final, loud flourish of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Many think Wes Anderson used it for his fictional Grand Budapest Hotel. He didn't, but you'll feel the connection immediately. It belongs to an era where the hotel was the whole reason for the trip.
Restoration & Preservation
The Hotel Gellért closed its doors in late 2021. It needed more than a coat of paint. Now owned by BDPST Group and managed by Mandarin Oriental, it's moving from four-star charm to five-star luxury. Archikon and Alexander Waterworth Interiors are leading the work. They have a tough job. They must keep the heritage protected while modernizing every wire and pipe. This isn't just a renovation. It's a resurrection. They're using original 1918 blueprints and old photos to rebuild the Lobby, the Danube Room, and the Gobelin Room. They're stripping away the duller additions from the socialist era. When you finally get a Hotel Gellért Budapest booking in 2027, you'll find a different layout. The room count is dropping to 134 to make space for 34 massive suites. It'll be the most important opening in Central Europe for years.
The Thermal Connection
Water is the reason this place exists. The hotel sits directly on top of thermal springs used since the Middle Ages. The Gellért Hotel and baths are one massive, interconnected complex. Historically, the best perk was the private elevator. You could grab your robe, skip the public lines, and ride straight down to the pools. The baths are a riot of Zsolnay pyrogranite tiles and glass roofs. They even have the world’s first wave pool from 1927. The water is packed with magnesium and calcium. People travel across the globe to soak in it. Even with the hotel Gellért closed, the baths (run by the city) remain a must-visit. Mandarin Oriental plans to add a new, exclusive Hotel Gellért spa for guests. Expect a mix of traditional Hungarian soaking and high-end wellness when the doors finally open.
