About This Event

Forget the stuffy waltzes. Every summer, ImPulsTanz turns Vienna into a sweaty, high-energy lab for contemporary movement. It is one of the world's biggest dance festivals, but it doesn't feel like an industry-only secret. For a full month, the city's grandest stages and grittiest warehouses host over 50 productions that range from massive premieres at the Burgtheater to experimental pieces at the mumok. You'll see legends and total unknowns sharing the same program. But the real magic happens off-stage. The Arsenal, a former military complex, becomes a massive pop-up academy where anyone can take a class. Whether you are a pro or have two left feet, the energy is infectious. Between the free outdoor classes and the nightly parties, the festival strips away the pretension usually found in high-art circles. It is raw, loud, and brilliantly physical.

History

It all started in 1984. Karl Regensburger and Ismael Ivo launched the 'Internationale Tanzwochen Wien' with just 20 workshops. They wanted to fix the lack of contemporary training in Austria. By 1988, it became ImPulsTanz and added public performances to the mix. Early shows featured pioneers like Marie Chouinard and Wim Vandekeybus. The growth was fast. In 1996, they added the danceWEB scholarship to help global talent. Then came the [8:tension] series in 2001 to highlight young choreographers. Today, it is Europe's largest dance event, pulling in 200,000 people to a city that now breathes modern performance.

The Programme

ImPulsTanz — Vienna International Dance Festival — The Programme

The lineup is a curated mix of the established and the provocative. You might catch a world premiere on a main stage one night and a multimedia installation in a museum basement the next. Since 2001, the [8:tension] series has been the place to spot the next big thing. These young choreographers don't play it safe. Expect experimental works that tackle politics, identity, and the body in ways that might make you uncomfortable. But that is the point. If you want to join in, look for 'Public Moves.' These are free, daily outdoor classes led by world-class teachers. No experience is required. Just show up at the designated park or square and move. It is the most inclusive way to experience the festival rhythm.

Vienna's architecture is part of the show. The Burgtheater on the Ringstraße is the festival hub. It is a grand, neo-baroque space that hosts the biggest international companies. After the final curtain, its Vestibül turns into the Festival Lounge for nightly drinks. For workshops, head to the Arsenal in the 3rd District. This old brick military complex now houses the world's largest temporary dance school. It's a massive, buzzing hive of rehearsal studios. The festival also spreads to the MuseumsQuartier. You'll find intimate, site-specific shows inside the mumok or the Leopold Museum. Walking between these spots is the best way to see how the festival takes over the city.

Highlights & Must-Sees

ImPulsTanz — Vienna International Dance Festival — Highlights & Must-Sees

Do not skip the social side of the calendar. The ImPulsTanz Soçial program is legendary for a reason. Nightly sets at the Burgtheater Vestibül let you grab a drink and dance with the performers you just saw on stage. Then there are the massive weekend parties at the City Hall (Rathaus) courtyard. They are loud, crowded, and essential. Even if you aren't a dancer, spend an afternoon at the Arsenal just to watch. The dedication in those studios is intense. If you're feeling brave, book a workshop in anything from classical ballet to voguing or Feldenkrais. Finally, keep an eye on the 'Extras' for cross-disciplinary art shows. These museum-based collaborations often blur the line between sculpture and dance. They are the festival's best-kept secrets.

Getting There

Public Transport

To reach the primary venue at the Burgtheater, take U-Bahn line U2 to 'Rathaus' or U3 to 'Herrengasse' (a 5-minute walk). Trams 1, 71, and D stop directly at 'Rathausplatz/Burgtheater'. For the Arsenal workshops, take Tram 18 or D to 'Fasangasse' or 'Quartier Belvedere'.

By Car

Parking in the 1st District is highly restricted and expensive. Use the Park & Ride at U-Bahn stations (e.g., Erdberg or Hütteldorf) or park at the Rathauspark Garage (expensive hourly rates apply).

By Taxi / Rideshare

Taxis can drop you directly at the Burgtheater main entrance on Universitätsring. Ride-hailing apps like Bolt or Uber are widely available, with a typical ride from the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) costing around €12-€15.

Tips

  • Vienna's public transport operates 24/7 on weekends, making it easy to return from late-night festival parties.
  • Consider renting a bike or using city bikes; the festival often offers affordable bike rentals for workshop participants at the Arsenal.
