Hallstatt lives up to the hype. It is a tight cluster of 19th-century timber houses pinned between the Dachstein mountains and the dark water of Lake Hallstatt. It's compact. It's steep. And it's legendary for salt mining history that goes back thousands of years. You won't find cars in the center, so you'll explore on foot. Wander past the evangelical church spire and duck into the market square. If you're hungry, skip the snacks and grab a table at a lakeside tavern for fresh char or trout. It's crowded in peak season, but once you're looking at the reflection of the peaks in the lake, you won't care. It's a preserved piece of alpine life that feels stubbornly old-school.

Wear real shoes. Hallstatt is full of slick cobblestones, sudden staircases, and steep grades. This is no place for flip-flops. The mountain weather is a wildcard, too.
