Das Loft Bar & Lounge

Opened in 2010, Das Loft was designed to be the architectural exclamation point of the Praterstraße. Pritzker Prize-winner Jean Nouvel didn't want just another hotel tower. He built a monochromatic glass monolith that mimics the steep, dramatic angles of St. Stephen's Cathedral across the canal. To keep the interior from feeling cold, Nouvel brought in Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist to install the signature illuminated ceiling, a move that turned the 18th floor into a glowing landmark visible from the street. It has since swapped its original Sofitel branding for the more avant-garde SO/ label, but the mission remains the same. It is a 21st-century temple of glass and light that has earned its spot in the Michelin Guide by proving that modern Vienna can be just as sophisticated as its Baroque ancestors.

Step out of the elevator and look straight ahead. You are standing in one of the few places where you can actually look down on the Inner City. Because Vienna protects its historic skyline with iron-clad height restrictions, this 18th-floor vantage point is gold. To your west, the tiled roof of St. Stephen’s Cathedral dominates the foreground, backed by the green, rolling humps of the Vienna Woods. Turn toward the east and you'll spot the Riesenrad Ferris wheel spinning slowly over the Prater park. It is a total 360-degree sweep. Watch the streetlights flicker on along the Danube Canal, turning the water into a dark ribbon framed by glowing traffic. It’s the ultimate perspective on a city that usually feels very grounded and old-world.

Shooting at Das Loft Bar and Lounge Vienna is a battle against reflections, but you can win. The glowing ceiling is your best friend and your worst enemy. To capture the colors without the glare, put your lens directly against the glass. Use a dark jacket or a rubber hood to block the light behind you. Wide-angle shots work best here to cram both the kaleidoscopic ceiling and the city lights into one frame. For the best views Vienna provides for your grid, aim for the golden hour. The low sun hits the cathedral at an angle that makes the stone glow. If you are shooting food, grab a window seat during weekend brunch. The natural light is clean and perfect for highlighting the detail on the plate. Just remember to be discreet. This is a high-end lounge, not a film set.
