About This Event

Friss Hús translates to "Fresh Meat," and it lives up to the name. This is Hungary’s top-tier event for short films, turning the city center into a magnet for sharp storytelling every late spring. It started as a local project but is now a heavyweight on the European circuit. In 2024, it officially became an Oscar-qualifying festival. You aren't just watching movies here. You're seeing the next big directors before they hit the mainstream. The vibe is high-energy and unpretentious. Most screenings happen in 90-minute blocks, packing in everything from polished dramas to experimental horror. Between sets, the crowd spills out into nearby cafes to talk shop over a cold fröccs. It is the best place to catch the Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival action. Most of the magic happens at the art-deco Puskin Cinema, but don't miss the open-air sets at Városháza Park. Watching a premiere under the stars in a hidden city courtyard is hard to beat.

History

Launched in 2013 by the Daazo.com team, Friss Hús filled a massive gap in the local scene. Before this, Hungarian shorts rarely saw the inside of a theater. The goal was simple: get new talent in front of a real audience. It worked. The festival became a kingmaker. Kristóf Deák’s "Sing" (Mindenki) screened here before it went on to win the 2017 Oscar for Best Live Action Short. By October 2024, the festival secured its own Oscar-qualifying status. Now, if a filmmaker wins the Best Hungarian Live-Action or Animated Short category here, they get a direct ticket to Academy Award consideration. It is a massive deal for a local festival.

The Programme

Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival — The Programme

The schedule is a fast-paced mix of Hungarian and International Competition blocks. These are the heavy hitters. You get high production values and tight scripts. Because these are shorts, the rhythm is relentless. If a film bores you, just wait ten minutes. A new one will start shortly. But the sidebars are where things get weird. The 'Queer Dreams' section tackles LGBTQ+ narratives with real grit. 'Horror' and 'Midnight' blocks are for the genre junkies. They even have a 'Weirdcore' section for the truly abstract stuff. If you're more into the business side, check out the 'Friss Pitch' forum. It is a rare chance to see how projects actually get funded. It makes for a much more diverse experience than your typical Budapest international film festival 2024 lineup.

Key Venues

Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival — Key Venues

Puskin Art Cinema on Kossuth Lajos utca is your home base. Built in 1926, it is a gold-leafed palace that feels remarkably grand for indie film. The Metropolis hall is the big stage, while Amarcord and Körhinta are better for quiet, intimate screenings. The lobby cafe is the heart of the event. Grab a coffee and you'll likely be sitting next to a director. For something different, head to Városháza Park. This is the City Hall courtyard, usually locked away from the public. During the festival, it turns into an open-air cinema with deck chairs and a bar. It is a 5-minute walk from Puskin. Sometimes the party migrates to Toldi Cinema nearby. That venue doubles as a club, so expect the night to end late there.

Tickets & Scheduling

Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival — Tickets & Scheduling

Don't try to buy a ticket for a single film. It doesn't work that way. You buy into a 'block' of four or five films that share a theme. Check the online catalog before you go. Some blocks are vastly different from others. Hungarian Competition premieres sell out first, so book those online early. You can also buy at the Puskin box office if you're feeling lucky. Early Bird passes are a steal if you plan on seeing more than three blocks. In the main cinema, seats are reserved. Don't be that person trying to find a spot in the dark. For the outdoor screenings at City Hall, it is first-come, first-served. Show up 20 minutes early to snag a deck chair. It beats sitting on the pavement.

Getting There

Public Transport

Take Metro M3 (Blue Line) to 'Ferenciek tere' (2-minute walk) or Metro M2 (Red Line) to 'Astoria' (3-minute walk). Bus lines 5, 7, 8E, and 133E also stop directly in front at 'Ferenciek tere'.

By Car

Parking is extremely difficult and expensive in District 5. Use the Franklin Ház parking garage on Reáltanoda utca, but public transport is strongly recommended.

By Taxi / Rideshare

Set the drop-off for 'Puskin Mozi'. From the city center, a ride should cost around €5-8. Use the Bolt or Főtaxi apps.

Tips

  • The venue is in a pedestrian-heavy zone; the M3 metro is the fastest way to arrive.
  • If attending outdoor screenings at City Hall, it is just a 5-minute walk from Puskin Cinema.

Tips & What to Know

1

Commit to the block

You're buying a 90-minute experience, not a single movie. It’s a great way to discover genres you’d usually skip.

2

Go outside

The City Hall (Városháza Park) screenings are the highlight of the week. Grab a drink, find a chair, and enjoy the spring air.

3

Subtitles are standard

Nearly every Hungarian film has English subtitles. International films are either in English or subtitled, so language isn't a barrier.

4

Lurk in the lobby

The Puskin Cinema cafe is where the deals happen. It’s the best spot in town for networking with the local film crowd.

5

Find the Budapest short film festival fringe

If you want the strange stuff, book the 'Weirdcore' or 'Midnight' sessions. They're much edgier than the main competition.
