About the District
Smíchov is Prague’s industrial soul gone modern. It isn’t the fairytale city you see in postcards. Instead, you get a gritty, high-energy mix of 19th-century facades and glass office blocks. Most travelers stick to the Old Town. You shouldn't. Head south of Malá Strana to the left bank of the Vltava. This is Prague 5. The Anděl intersection anchors everything. It's loud, fast, and packed with locals. But walk a few blocks and you’ll find quiet riverside paths. Or climb up to Sacré Coeur for a view of the city without the crowds. It’s perfect if you want real food and cheaper beds. Plus, the air usually smells like hops from the massive local brewery.

Overview & Character
This place was once the city's smoky workshop. It dates back to 1402 but really took off in the 1800s. Factories and breweries defined it. The center point is Anděl. It means "Angel." The name comes from an old pub, U zlatého anděla. Look up at the Zlatý Anděl building. Jean Nouvel designed it in the late 90s. It has a huge glass angel inspired by the movie Wings of Desire. You can even spot quotes from the poet Rainer Maria Rilke on the glass. Today, Smíchov is a layered neighborhood. You'll see office workers grab lunch next to guys in work boots. Old industrial shells now hold galleries. It feels lived-in. Authentic. It lacks the polish of the tourist center. That's exactly why you'll like it.
Top Attractions & Landmarks

Start at the Staropramen Brewery Visitor Center on Nádražní 43. It’s the city’s biggest brewery. They’ve been at it since 1869. Take the 50-minute tour. A virtual brewmaster named Josef Paspa walks you through the heritage. Afterward, head to the river. The Smíchovská náplavka embankment is where everyone hangs out. Look for the "kobky." These old river vaults now have massive glass doors. They house tiny cafes and art spaces. The view of Vyšehrad across the water is one of the best in town. If you like history, visit Bertramka Villa. Mozart stayed here to compose. Then see the Smíchov Synagogue. It’s a rare functionalist building. For a break, hike to Sacré Coeur Park or the Musaion gazebo. You’ll get a 180-degree sweep of the city.
Where to Eat & Drink
Smíchov eats well. For the best Vietnamese in Prague, find PHO 100 at Nádražní 300/100. The Ta brothers make their own rice noodles. Order the Phở bò chín for 275 CZK. Add the crispy quay pastry for 45 CZK. It's simple, hot, and exactly what you need after a night of Czech lager. Need caffeine? Go to Kavárna co hledá jméno. It’s tucked inside an old carpentry workshop courtyard. Grab a 100 CZK cold brew. Their eggs benedict soufflé is legendary. For a serious dinner, trek up to Na Kopci. It’s unpretentious but serves top-tier seasonal food. Try the wine pairing for 955 CZK. Or skip the booze and get the fermented lemonade pairing for 480 CZK. Of course, you should drink the beer. Go to the Staropramen Brewery Bar. Order a pint straight from the source.
Where to Stay
You get more for your money here. If you want luxury, book Mamaison Hotel Riverside at Janáčkovo nábřeží 15. It’s a grand Art Nouveau beauty with 81 rooms. Expect to pay around $102 a night. The river views are worth the price. For a mid-range stay, try NH Collection Prague near the park for $101. Budget travelers have great options too. The Chevron Hotel is solid at $62. Or check out Hotel Augustus et Otto for $58. Stay near Anděl if you want transit at your door. Pick a spot near the embankment for a quieter walk across the bridge. Both options beat paying double in the Old Town.
Getting Around
Anděl is the neighborhood’s beating heart. It’s a massive transit hub. The yellow Metro Line B stops here. So do eight different tram lines. Use the 4, 9, or 12 to get most places. The system is fast and cheap. Buy a 30-minute ticket for 39 CZK. Or download the Lítačka app to pay 36 CZK instead. A 24-hour pass is 150 CZK. Use the app and it’s 140 CZK. Always validate your paper ticket immediately. Don't risk the fine. The area around Anděl is mostly a pedestrian zone. If you have big bags, buy a 20 CZK luggage ticket. It’s a minor cost that saves you a major headache.
Shopping & Markets

This is where Prague shops. The Nový Smíchov mall is massive. It sits right on the Anděl corner where factories used to be. You'll find 130 shops and a cinema. It also has a giant hypermarket. It has everything you need. But for something real, wait for Saturday. The Farmers' Market on the embankment runs from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It starts in March and goes until Christmas. Go for the fresh bread and local goat cheese. Grab a coffee and watch the river. The side streets around Anděl also hide small bakeries and boutiques. It’s a mix of big-box convenience and local community soul.
Safety & Practical Tips
Smíchov is safe, but keep your wits about you. Pickpockets like the crowds at Anděl and the train station. Watch your bags. And don't forget your transit ticket. Inspectors swarm the Anděl hub. If you don't have a validated ticket, you'll pay a 1,500 CZK fine on the spot. It jumps to 2,000 CZK if you wait. Use the Lítačka app. It saves you money and the stress of finding a machine. A 30-minute fare is 36 CZK on the app versus 39 CZK for paper. One last thing. Book your Staropramen tour online. The English slots fill up fast, especially on Saturdays.
